Kids take on breast cancer with cupcakes, lemonade

While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about. ~Angela Schwindt

I don't think we give children enough credit, at times, adults focus on what's not right with children, instead of what's right with them. Children do amazing things, I can attest to that, Iam the mother of four adult children all good citizens of the world.

Here is an enlightening article from Sign On San Diego on how children contribute to making their world a better place - with the help of all things,  cupcakes and lemonade.

Four elementary school students walked into Scripps Polster Breast Care Center on Genesee Avenue the other day with a surprise gift of $138.

Abby and Max LeGrange, ages 10 and 6, had teamed up with their schoolmates, Lily and Jackson Stratton, to sell lemonade and cupcakes on a Mission Bay street corner.

The four La Jolla Elementary School entrepreneurs came up with the idea to help out Abby and Max’s grandmother, Jane Gleason, who is battling breast cancer. “Not many little kids watch a loved one go through a terminal illness, but Abby and Max don’t just help take care of their grandma, they are being proactive in helping find a cure,” says their proud mom, Wendy. They can “see that even the smallest amount can make an impact.”

Reappearing act: Nobel laureate Gerald Edelman, who heads the nonprofit Neurosciences Institute for brain research on Torrey Pines mesa, received the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies’ 2010 Navigator Award. The ceremony was Thursday night in Washington, D.C. With the Neurosciences magic show fundraiser scheduled the following evening, Edelman had to work a little magic himself, getting back from the East Coast the next day in time to make opening remarks and introduce magician Mark Mitton.

Inside journalism: Former NBC 7/39 news anchor Marty Levin took a moment to reflect on the economy’s toll on journalism during the San Diego Press Club awards Tuesday. He joked that in these penny-pinching days, reporters need to submit paperwork to go to Jamul. Plus they’re expected “not only to go to a Motel 6, but to share the same room.”

In accepting the outstanding journalism award named for the late great newsman Harold Keen, NBC 7/39’s senior field producer Paul Krueger said he feels lucky to have a job in this era of cutbacks — “but I know why.” He confided that he’s the only one who cleans the newsroom kitchen microwave, washes the dishes and ventures out to Super Discount to buy cleaning supplies. Others taking home special awards were 10News Managing Editor J.W. August, PR dynamo Lynne Friedmann, investigative reporter Shane Liddick, who performed perilous undercover work in Mexico and Iraq, and online editor Ron Donoho.

Inspired response: Local restaurateur David Cohn answered a host of questions at the recent international Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association’s version of Bravo’s “Inside the Actors Studio.”

He didn’t miss a beat when responding to the show’s traditional closing question: “What would you like to hear God say to you at the Pearly Gates?

The Cohn Restaurant Group founder quickly answered: “I’m hungry.”

A bear is feted: Tireless volunteer Catherine Rodriguez took home the local Parkinson’s Association’s “Spirit of Life” award Sunday. But she wasn’t alone. A companion award was bestowed on Honey Bear, her therapy dog. You see, Rodriguez herself suffers from Parkinson’s disease, an incurable neurological disorder, and Honey Bear helps steady her gait and balance.

The association has just eliminated the word “disease” from its name, Kathy Bruyere proudly announced. “Now all of us are working together to eliminate Parkinson’s.”

What does Cupcakes Have to Do With President Barack Obama?

A touch of humor as the President Barack Obama, chats with Jody Hall. Her cupcakes are not being displayed on any beautiful cupcake cake stand, they are being inspected by the president's Secret Service entourage.

This article is from My Ballard - Daily news for Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.

Jody Hall, the owner of Cupcake Royale, had the opportunity to talk with President Barack Obama during his “Backyard Chat” last week in Wedgwood.

The audio is really low on this clip. You can read the entire transcript here.

Hall believes the president did get one of the popular salted caramel cupcakes she brought for him. “The Secret Service said they’d get him one if it passed the bomb-free test!” Hall says.

An order for 500 Cupcakes: Don't Count Your Chickens Before They're Hatched

This story has a little touch of humor and we will not need a cupcake cake stand to display the 500 cupcakes ordered by telephone.

Police Log: That's A Lot Of CupCakes

Incident handled by the Belmont Police Department.

Article from the Belmont Patch

It's always best to check twice before doing most things. Remember the old carpenter adage: measure twice, cut once. That is also true before starting a big job; you don't want find out that half-way through a project and discover you're doing something wrong.

Checking up helped one Belmont business owner from learning a lesson the hard way. On Oct. 7, the owner of a Trapelo Road bakery called police to tell them that a potential customer called in an order for 500 cupcakes, which is a lot of cupcakes. The person calling gave a credit card number but what alarmed the owner was that the "person" making the order "sounded like a recorded voice." This prompted her to check the credit card ... and find out it was stolen. The police told the owner to contact them the next time the person called but despite making such a big order, the "recorded voice" never called back.

Cupcake Wedding Cakes: Wedding cake for the budget conscious

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]These wedding cupcakes and display were created by Red Velvet Stephanie. This is a great example of how you can use cupcakes for your wedding. If you are creative, you can design your own cupcake cake stand and bake your own cupcakes, or you can use the expertise  of someone like Red Velvet Stephanie. It will cost less than the traditional wedding cake (in most cases). There are always exceptions to the rule.

Red Velvet Stephanie (RVS) was a contestant on one of the Food Network Cupcakes War Challenge ... I must admit that I am a fan. I never watch it in real time - this is where TIVO comes in handy. I get to scroll through all those commercials. The best part of the show, for me, is when the last two contestants have to design their own cupcake cake stand to display one thousand of their delicious cupcakes.

She did not win the competition - I have never tasted her cupcakes but her cupcakes must be tasty, she created the display for Jesse Csincsak and Ann Lueders the former stars on ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The couple got married at the Rumor Hotel in Las Vegas last month.

She's a Savvy Female Entrepreneur, she has packaged the recipes from her Food Network Cupcake War experience for you to bake and enjoy. It is called the Cupcake Wars Snack Attack 4-pack and you can find the gourmet mixes in her shop under cupcake kits.

I am not affiliated with the company and I don't know her, personally.

Enjoy!

New Competition For the Best Cupcake in Berkeley

Cupcakes are the new trend and they are showing up in some unusual places.

Cal Dining joins the cupcake craze

| 04 October 2010

There is new competition for best cupcake in Berkeley. Cal Dining celebrated the launch of its new line of cupcakes, called "Cub Cakes," with a grand opening event last week on Sproul Plaza. The free event offered a tasting of the new line of confections being made in-house at the Honey Bear Bakery.

After the kickoff event, the sweet treat will be available for purchase Monday through Thursday at rotating Cal Dining outlets beginning today, October 4. The exact locations for each day's sale will be sent out via Twitter and Facebook. The retail price will be $2.75 for all flavors.

The cupcakes are made in-house by executive pastry chef Bob Reich, a classically trained Pastry Chef with an extensive pastry and baking background, including the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco and, more recently, at Market Hall Bakery.

Cal Dining chose cupcakes as their product of choice because of their popularity in today's market. "Cupcakes are a hot trend," said Chuck Davies, associate director of Residential Dining. "Cal Dining and Honey Bear think our Cub Cakes are every bit as good as others available, and we want to be able to provide a quality product — real butter, organic eggs — and exciting flavors to our customers at a reasonable price."

Flavors being offered include "Saucy Red Velvet," "Blonde Ambition," and "Funky Monkey" among others. There are also vegan options available. Reich says he imagines the flavors will change often, though, based on what sells best and customer feedback.

To find out when and where you can get a taste, follow @CalDining on Twitter or visit its Facebook page.
